Bo/Staff

The Bo/Staff is the one of the most common weapons in the world. So simplistic in form yet so versatile in combat. 

In this full day seminar you will experience three approaches to this foundational weapon.  The Martial Arts traditions of China, Japan and Okinawa will be represented.

10:30am to 12:00pm - Sifu Magwood 

Shepherd’s Staff

The first weapon form of the My Jong Law Horn Pai System. The Shepherd’s Staff is a large and intricate form it contains a lifetime of staff foundations and fighting concepts. 

Sifu Magwood will teach a short section of the form along with two person drills and fighting applications.

12:30pm to 2:00pm - Sensei Langevin

Bo Kata #1

The first in a series of three katas developed by Sensei Bernardo Bo Kata #1 is based on the famous Tokumine Bo Kata. 

Sensei Langevin will be teaching a portion of the kata along with two person drills and fighting applications.

2:15pm - 3:45pm - Sensei Aron Polmateer 

Tokyo No Bo Kumite, ShiShiRyu Bo

Passed down through the Kudaka family in Okinawa. The Gokyo no Bo Kumite (Five Teachings of Staff Sparring) is a structured series of partner drills designed to develop skill, timing, and strategy in bojutsu. Each teaching (kyo) introduces progressively advanced techniques, emphasizing offensive strikes, defensive maneuvers, and counterattacks.

A high and constant level of adaptability to an ever changing situation
lies at the core of traditional combative systems.

The first part of the seminar features training in push hands. Push
hand/sticky hands are a feature of many traditional martial arts including
Karate. push hands was even practiced in Jiu Jitsu program at the Hatashita Dojo under Shihan Forrester.

The second part is crucial for applying any locks, throws, takedowns, etc.
in a fluid manner during ever changing circumstances. The martial art is
Jiu Jitsu but you will also find these techniques in any martial art you
study from Tai Chi to Karate.

The third part is a look of how we adapt movements within forms/Kata no
matter what martial art you study.

This is a deeply comprehensive seminar that has no limit on age, level of
training or the martial art you practise! We invite you to take part!
